Karen Kligerman, PhD

About Me: I earned my PhD in English Literature from NYU and have years of experience teaching expository writing to incoming college freshmen both at home and abroad. Through my private practice, I have tutored middle-school, high-school and college students in the English Language Arts, and have been successfully helping students with their college & high school admissions essays for over ten years. For my New York City students, I am able to work in person or remotely; for international and students across the U.S., I am available to work remotely.

My Philosophy: The college essay should enhance and cast a richer light on a student's overall application. A well-conceived essay provides a special glimpse for the admissions board into the way a student thinks, creates, and engages with the world. My straightforward manner of communicating and my lifelong love of language and literature have inspired even the most reserved teens to express themselves with authenticity and ease. Time and again, I have witnessed the anxiety of both students and parents turn into excitement as an idea crystallizes and the student's voice emerges.

My Mission: I pride myself on being able to connect with each and every one of my students and draw forth a meaningful and compelling piece of writing, revealing the student to be an individual thinker who is equipped to embrace every exciting facet of college life. Through a series  of one-on-one meetings, ranging from one to two hours, I help students alight on an essay topic that resonates for them. I aim to support them in developing an essay that captures their authentic voice. In our sessions, we brainstorm, outline, draft, and revise to develop an essay to be proud of, one that represents the student's finest effort and heartfelt beliefs.
